Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a theoretical method to analyze the rotation accuracy of rotating machinery with multi-support structures. The method effectively considers the geometric errors and assembly deformation of parts.

Design/methodology/approach

A method composed of matrix and FEA methods is proposed to do the analysis. The deviation propagation analysis results and external loads are set as boundary conditions of the model which is built with Timoshenko beam elements to calculate the spatial pose of the rotor. The calculation is performed repeatedly as the rotation angle increased to get the rotation trajectories of concerned nodes, and further evaluation is done to get the rotation accuracy. Additionally, to get more reliable results, the bearing motion errors and stiffness are analyzed by a static model considering manufacturing errors of parts.

Findings

The feasibility of the proposed method is verified through a case study of a high-precision spindle. The method reasonably predicts the rotation accuracy of the spindle.

Originality/value

For rotating machinery with multi-support structures, the paper proposes a modeling method to predict the rotation accuracy, simultaneously considering geometric errors and assembly deformation of parts. This would improve the accuracy of tolerance analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The aero-engine array electrostatic monitoring technology (AEMT) can provide more and more accurate information about the direct product of the fault, and it is a novel condition monitoring technology that is expected to solve the problem of high false alarm rate of traditional electrostatic monitoring technology. However, aliasing of the array electrostatic signals often occurs, which will greatly affect the accuracy of the information identified by using the electrostatic sensor array. The purpose of this paper is to propose special solutions to the above problems.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a method for de-aliasing of array electrostatic signals based on compressive sensing principle is proposed by taking advantage of the sparsity of the distribution of multiple pulse signals that originally constitute aliased signals in the time domain.

Findings

The proposed method is verified by finite element simulation experiments. The simulation experiments show that the proposed method can recover the original pulse signal with an accuracy of 96.0%; when the number of pulse signals does not exceed 5, the proposed method can recover the pulse peak with an average absolute error of less than 5.5%; and the recovered aliased signal time-domain waveform is very similar to the original aliased signal time-domain waveform, indicating that the proposed method is accurate.

Originality/value

The proposed method is one of the key technologies of AEMT.

Abstract

Purpose

Grey modeling technique is an important element of grey system theory, and academic articles applied to agricultural science research have been published since 1985, proving the broad applicability and effectiveness of the technique from different aspects and providing a new means to solve agricultural science problems. The analysis of the connotation and trend of the application of grey modeling technique in agricultural science research contributes to the enrichment of grey technique and the development of agricultural science in multiple dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the relevant literature selected from China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Web of Science, SpiScholar and other databases in the past 37 years (1985–2021), this paper firstly applied the bibliometric method to quantitatively visualize and systematically analyze the trend of publication, productive author, productive institution, and highly cited literature. Then, the literature is combed by the application of different grey modeling techniques in agricultural science research, and the literature research progress is systematically analyzed.

Findings

The results show that grey model technology has broad prospects in the field of agricultural science research. Agricultural universities and research institutes are the main research forces in the application of grey model technology in agricultural science research, and have certain inheritance. The application of grey model technology in agricultural science research has wide applicability and precise practicability.

Originality/value

By analyzing and summarizing the application trend of grey model technology in agricultural science research, the research hotspot, research frontier and valuable research directions of grey model technology in agricultural science research can be more clearly grasped.

Abstract

An efficient algorithm to estimate the large elasto‐plastic strains encountered in thin sheet metal forming parts has been continuously developed by the authors since 1987. The algorithm is based on a finite element discretization of the known final shape. In this paper a new simple triangular shell element with constant membrane and bending strains is presented using discrete Kirchhoff constraints. The expressions of the internal force vector and logarithmic strains through the thickness are derived. Two applications are considered to discuss the validity and efficiency of the numerical procedure.

Abstract

Health scientists and urban planners have long been interested in the influence that the built environment has on the physical activities in which we engage, the environmental hazards we face, the kinds of amenities we enjoy, and the resulting impacts on our health. However, it is widely recognized that the extent of this influence, and the specific cause-and-effect relationships that exist, are still relatively unclear. Recent reviews highlight the need for more individual-level data on daily activities (especially physical activity) over long periods of time linked spatially to real-world characteristics of the built environment in diverse settings, along with a wide range of personal mediating variables. While capturing objective data on the built environment has benefited from wide-scale availability of detailed land use and transport network databases, the same cannot be said of human activity. A more diverse history of data collection methods exists for such activity and continues to evolve owing to a variety of quickly emerging wearable sensor technologies. At present, no “gold standard” method has emerged for assessing physical activity type and intensity under the real-world conditions of the built environment; in fact, most methods have barely been tested outside of the laboratory, and those that have tend to experience significant drops in accuracy and reliability. This paper provides a review of these diverse methods and emerging technologies, including biochemical, self-report, direct observation, passive motion detection, and integrated approaches. Based on this review and current needs, an integrated three-tiered methodology is proposed, including: (1) passive location tracking (e.g., using global positioning systems); (2) passive motion/biometric tracking (e.g., using accelerometers); and (3) limited self-reporting (e.g., using prompted recall diaries). Key development issues are highlighted, including the need for proper validation and automated activity-detection algorithms. The paper ends with a look at some of the key lessons learned and new opportunities that have emerged at the crossroads of urban studies and health sciences.

Abstract

This paper introduces a behavioral framework to model residential relocation decision in island areas, at which the decision in question is influenced by the characteristics of island regions, policy variables related to accessibility measures, and housing prices at the proposed island area, as well as personal, household (HH), job, and latent characteristics of the decision makers.

The model framework corresponds to an integrated choice and latent variable (ICLV) setting where the discrete choice model includes latent variables that capture attitudes and perceptions of the decision makers. The latent variable model is composed of a group of structural equations describing the latent variables as a function of observable exogenous variables and a group of measurement equations, linking the latent variables to observable indicators.

An empirical study has been developed for the Greek Aegean island area. Data were collected from 900 HHs in Greece contacted via telephone. The HHs were presented hypothetical scenarios involving policy variables, where 2010 was the reference year. ICLV binary logit (BL) and mixed binary logit (MBL) relocation choice models were estimated sequentially. Findings suggest that MBL models are superior to BL models, while both the policy and the latent variables significantly affect the relocation decision and improve considerably the models' goodness of fit. Sample enumeration method is finally used to aggregate the results over the Greek population.

Purpose

Hoping to uncover the physical principles of the vibration of the functionally graded material (FGM) microplate, by which the authors can make contributions to the design and manufacturing process in factories like micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and other industries.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors design a method by establishing a reasonable mathematical model of the physical microplate composed of a porous FGM.

Findings

The authors discover that the porosity, the distributions of porosity, the power law of the FGM and the length-to-thickness ratio all affect the natural frequency of the vibration of the microplate, but in different ways.

Originality/value

Originally proposed a model of the micro FGM plate considering the different distributions of the porosity and scale effect and analyzed the vibration frequency of it.
